 Research Data Australia:

Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) Achievement Award 2010

Samantha Searle

Samantha Searle is the 2010 recipient of the Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) Achievement Award, in recognition of her leadership in the field of research data management.

Sam has been Data Management Coordinator at Monash University since 2008. In this role, she has led activity in research data management both within the Library and across the university, including the development of data management policies and procedures and the institution of programs and training for Library staff.

Well-managed data, be it in print, digital or physical format, is an integral part of research. Through her work with researchers, librarians, eResearch and Information Technology staff Sam has enabled the development of a growing suite of policies, procedures and information gathering templates and processes to inform and shape the development of sustainable and effective research data management at Monash University. Sam and the team provide guidelines, seminars and support to individuals, teams and departments, as well as referrals to the Monash e-Research Centre (MeRC) for digital data storage and management solutions. Sam also provides advice on data planning, to assist researchers with identifying and resolving data-related issues in the areas of intellectual property, ethics, publication and licensing.

Sam has shared much of this work with other institutions via ANDS information distribution networks and through articles, presentations, visits and a data management web site. She has also contributed to a range of policy debates and made evaluation reports, communication plans, policies and procedures available.
