At eResearch Australasia 2011, Paul Coddington, NeAT Program Manager, presented the National eResearch Architecture Taskforce Projects report, about the 14 projects undertaken as part of this ANDS-ARCS co-funded initiative. The projects covered a wide range of research activities and delivered robust and enduring advances in research tools. This report highlights the outcomes and benefits of each project. A recent study commissioned by ANDS - undertaken by the Centre for Strategic Economic Studies, Victoria University - has shown that the case for making public sector information freely available is strong. More information.
A Starring Role!

An ANDS funded project was a recent winner at the prestigious CSIRO Awards 2011. The Parkes Observatory Pulsar Data Archive Team won the CSIRO Medal for Support Excellence for the development of a data archive that captures data directly from the CSIRO Parkes radio telescope, stores it and feeds metadata into the CSIRO repository, discipline portals and to Research Data Australia. The metadata can be viewed and the data acessed via Research Data Australia and the CSIRO Data Access Portal.
The team was a partnership between research scientists, librarians and IT staff in CSIRO and the combination of skill sets was a major factor in the success of the project.
2011 Information Policy Conference

Migrating ARCS identity provider (IdP) sharedToken to your home institution's IdP

To ensure continuous access to all the records and handles previously entered using an ARCS IdP account, users whose institution has recently been added as an AAF member should port or migrate their existing sharedToken to their institution's IdP. More information.
AusGOAL site official launch

Earlier this week AusGOAL website went live online. ANDS is working with AusGOAL to enable an aspiration of the Australian Research Data Commons: that more data is re-usable.
AusGOAL is an open licensing framework designed to assist organisations to start by default from the most open licensing arrangements and work back from there as appropriate.

Australian mirror of EMBL’s EBI database launched last month at the University of Queensland in Brisbane

A recent article in The Australian (02/07/11) highlights the launch of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)’s European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) database in Australia, the first ever mirror of this database outside the UK.
ANDS has co-funded this project with EMBL Australia, the Queensland government, University of Queensland, the federal government and Bioplatforms Australia. The article is found here.

An article recently published in D-lib Magazine written by Malcolm Wolski, Joanna Richardson and Robyn Rebollo from Griffith University, Australia; provides further detail about the development of this system.
Prato workshop - April 2011

In April, ANDS facilitated a three day invitational workshop at the Monash University Prato. The intention was to bring together research data infrastructure providers and stakeholder representatives in order to explore the potential for much closer collaboration and co-ordinated activity. Attendees came from the UK, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Canada, and Australia. Notable Australian attendees were Professor Paul Bonnington, Director of the Monash e-Research Centre and Linda O'Brien, Pro Vice Chancellor (Information Services). The result was a great deal of very productive discussion and a firm commitment to work much more closely together in very practical ways. More information to follow in the next issue of Share.
Data front and centre at DIISR-EU workshop

ANDS was invited to lead a plenary session on data at a joint Department of Innovation and EU workshop held in Brussels on April 4th and 5th. The workshop was intended to facilitate co-operation between researchers in synchrotron science, microscopy, and ocean science. The data session preceded these individual breakout sessions and emphasised the importance of data issues, something that was picked up in much of the later discussion. Further details and a registration form are available at http://ands.org.au/events/roadshow.html Real time data is being published from the Research Vessels Southern Surveyor and Aurora Australis through the AODN and into the Australian Research Data Commons.More details at Intersect recently launched their Innovation Project, aimed at centralising the effort of several institutions to make best use of new gene sequencing instruments. ANDS has funded automatic capture of metadata for these instruments. For more, please see here ANDS is inviting one member of the staff of institutions receiving contract funding through its Seeding the Commons Program to attend an intensive five-day training program. DIISR have invited submissions in response to a discussion paper on implementation models for the $50 million Super Science electronic research data storage project. Further details, including the discussion paper are available online. ANDS has allocated $6.815 million dollars for "fast start projects", $1.805 million dollars for "NeAT projects", and $16.15 million dollars for data capture and seeding the commons projects at research institutions. Details are available online This non-technical guide describes the meaning and purpose of the information collected for publishing in Research Data Australia, and explains how to use the RIF-CS Schema to share that information with the ANDS Collections Registry. The ANDS Roadshow will be held at the Melbourne Town Hall on May 10 and 11. Registrations are now being taken. The ANDS Needs Analysis Survey is available for public comment.
The results of public comments received will be incorporated into a revised version of the Needs Analysis Survey and used to develop an ANDS Services Roadmap..... The highly successful series of ANDS Roadshows will continue in Canberra on March 30 and 31, and in Sydney on April 19 and 20, 2010. ANDS and ARCS are supporting a set of National e-Research Architecture Taskforce (NeAT) projects. One is building new services for Australian literature communities. The Aus-e-Lit Project commenced in July 2008. The Project's goal is to help AustLit users to discover, organise, describe, analyse, collaborate and communicate in a networked environment. The project team is working on several case studies ANDS has launched two new online services to support data intensive research and help build the foundations of a national and international global data commons: ANDS has held two information gathering forums on the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research to help us develop materials to take to the wider community. ANDS will help Australian researchers handle the increasing amount and complexity of data, according to "The Australian" Higher Education Supplement. Professor Edwina Cornish, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Monash University has announced that Dr Ron Sandland will be the Chair of the ANDS Steering Committee. Ron Sandland was previously CSIRO's Deputy Chief Executive. He joined CSIRO's Division of Mathematics and Statistics in 1969 and became chief of the division in 1988, later managing its merger with the Division of Information Technology into what is now CSIRO Mathematical and Information Sciences. In 1999 he became Deputy Chief Executive of CSIRO and led the Flagship Initiative. This involved six major cross-disciplinary research programs and was aimed at addressing problems of a national priority. Ron's interests have been in applying statistics to solve challenging real problems in areas as diverse as growth of organisms, analysis of 'mark-recapture' experiments, ore-reserve estimation and quality-improvement. Ron Sandland will officially take up his appointment as Chair at the inaugural meeting of the ANDS Steering Committee in Melbourne on 17 December 2008 ANDS is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Ross Wilkinson as Executive Director of ANDS. Dr Wilkinson joins ANDS from Monday 24th November 2008 and he will work from the Monash University office. Dr Ross Wilkinson obtained his PhD in mathematics at Monash University in 1982. After teaching in the United States and La Trobe University, he joined the Department of Computer Science at RMIT and worked there until 1997, when he joined the Division of Mathematical and Information Sciences at CSIRO as a Principal Research Scientist. In 1998, CSIRO worked with the Victorian governments's Public Records Office to develop the Victorian Electronic Records Strategy (VERS), a framework to reliably and authentically archive electronic documents created in government. Ross was the technical director of this project. From 2000-2004 he was Science and Industry Manager and from 2005-2008 he led the Information Engineering laboratory at CSIRO. During this time Funnelback, the Enterprise Search Company was a spin off from the Information Engineering Laboratory. His principal research interests are in the area of information environments. Some of his areas of research are document retrieval effectiveness, personal information delivery, structured documents, and the use of XML in document retrieval. He has published over 80 research papers, has served on many program committees and was a program co-chair for both SIGIR'96 and SIGIR'98. In 1998 he co-authored the book entitled Document Computing:Technologies for Managing Electronic Document Collections, published by Kluwer. In the Australian National Data Service his passion is to enable more researchers to reuse research data more often. The ANDS Technical Working Group helped to draw together Towards the Australian Data Commons in 2007. The ANDS Establishment Project reconvened the ANDS Technical Working Group for a consultation on Thursday 5 June, 2008. The group endorsed in principle the Draft Interim Business Plan for ANDS for 2008/9, but suggested a number of areas that needed further work and clarification.
